What is RTI?
Response to Intervention, also know as Multi-tiered System of Support is an educational approach that is used to help identify and provide support for students with learning and behavioral needs. This process is designed to help improve the educational outcomes for students by targeting specific areas of needs with the use of researched based assessments and educational instruction known as intervention. The response to intervention model implements levels of instruction that increases in intensity with the more instruction a student requires.
Tier 1 Universal Instruction: This tier addresses the needs of all students. 80 - 90 percent of students are expected to fall into this tier. Students are considered at grade level and have expected behavioral needs. (whole group instruction, guided reading & literacy centers)
Tier 2 Targeted Intervention: This tier addresses the needs of at-risk students that require supplemental instruction. 10 - 20 percent of students may fall into this category. Depending on student needs, they will receive 20 to 30 minutes of instruction in addition to tier one several times a week. Tier 3: Intensive Individual Learning Plan: Students receive high-intensity instruction that is designed specifically with their needs in mind. Less than five percent of students are expected to move to this level of instruction. |
